How to Stay Young? In black and white, “Stay Fast.”
The 1912 building was decrepit: leaking roof, cracked floors, broken windows. Our client, the owner, stays vibrant through the fun of speed, so the Speed Shop was born.
We divided the giant warehouse space into two equal sides: One side is a private competitive bike-racer’s gym in energizing white with touches of warming wood. The other side is for an impressive car collection, in dramatic black with amazing lighting.
The black and white sides contrast beautifully together.
Fountain of Youth through Cycling
State of the art bikes, the Yahoo Kicker stationary bikes, use virtual reality and track effort to maximize health and speed gains.
Here the owner stays fit and fast, through the motivation of training and competing as a sponsored bike team with a group of his friends. Each bike has a virtual reality screens to take the group through exciting programs, such as underwater tunnels through the sunken city of Atlantis.
The health side features a weight-lifting gym, kitchen, sauna, laundry, locker room, and a massage room where in a surprising design twist the flooring goes right up the wall.
The kitchen nestles into the big space comfortably, where healthy smoothies, filtered water and coffee keep the team fueled and healthy. Gorgeous walnut wood cabinets feature polished stainless steel plating that ties into the mirrored backsplash. Hidden lighting strips in the thick walnut wood shelving, and a waterfall stone countertop cascading to the floor give this sophisticated design beauty.
The locker room has super glossy white lockers with a warm wood pattern to the ceiling that is echoed in the floor, with a hand-made teak wood bench and cedar on the wall hiding the laundry hoses and ducting while tying into the sauna with its many mood lighting options.
The bathrooms tie together with unexpected tile with little golf ball texturing and unexpected patterning with more of the warming walnut wood.
And a conference room is all style, adding one more possible use to the open concept space.
Fountain of Youth Through Racing.
The second side reveals the exciting car collection from the health side through giant glass windows, creating an amazing display.
The cars are track-ready and poised to drive out onto the street for a joy ride at any time. One of these is a simple Volkswagen, the same type the owner had in high school. This private collection gives the owner joy, and continues the collecting that has been his family tradition started by his dad.
Framing it all Together.
Our client’s love for speed, health, and art, are all carefully framed in the Speed Shop. Meticulous layout, generous windows, sophisticated materials and a dramatic play between natural and artificial lighting package the Speed Shop as both a literal and figurative gallery – highlighting all things our client values.
In contrast to all elements of that pertain to moving fast, the Speed Shop is also a place for our client to relax, unwind, and slow down.
