Though not one of our famous houses, this was one where we took an average-sized old house with a really bad floor plan and moved walls and developed lovely details until we had produced a rare, excellent home where we had had only a below-average one.
With over 1,200 residential designs to his credit, John is certainly one of the most prolific high-end architectural designers around. After an estimated 40,000 hours of design work, John sees how to lay out a space in flashes of insight, often having solved the problems of a similar house, or possibly another house by the same builder or architect.
We envision these spaces so completely in plan, that we often remember the plans better than the actual spaces. After he makes a plan for a house, John will sometimes head for doors, openings, or stairs that have yet to be built! Our minds are trained to imagine what will be, so that we see the future space more clearly than the space we are walking through.
