Demuddling a Remuddle

Project: The 80s-style kitchen and the fact that the entire family had to share one bathroom drove the Anderson’s to move. We made them want to come back.

Client: Brandon Anderson, contractor, and Alison Anderson, English teacher, coach and mom

Anderson House: Test of Creativity

The kitchen was unworkable with few cabinets and a chimney breaking up a key wall. The kitchen was moved to what had been the dining room. The former kitchen space was then opened up to the rest of the house, and to the outside. With this the house became open and light, and we had the room to build a well functioning kitchen.

The upstairs was likewise unworkable. The whole family was forced to share a single bathroom with a claw foot tub in its center and a miniscule sink tucked awkwardly in a corner.

We made the bath generous by putting in a shower, and making the bathroom only open to the master, and so capturing wall space for a fine his and hers sink.

The kids got their own cute Jack and Jill bath.

The difficult design challenges were all solved in a most satisfactory manner.

Q & A with the Andersons . . .

Q: "You remodeled two big Irvington Houses in the same year. What was different about working with McCulloch Construction?"

A: "For our other remodel, we hired the best known design-build firm in Portland. There was no comparison. McCulloch Construction cost about half, was more creative and enthusiastic, and achieved a higher quality and better looking product, and got the work done faster. McCulloch Construction was also more respectful, and clearly delighted in the work."
