The Colonial Revival Style

Colonial Revival Style

"This is the most expensive residence (or nearly so) built by prominent building contractor Frederic E. Bowman. When completed in 1912, it was sold for $20,000. Fine basalt stonework was used in the lower level exterior. This home is Colonial Revival on the outside and has a rich Arts & Crafts interior. It contains natural woodwork, elegant cabinets, and beveled/leaded glass inside. The decorative cast iron fence was added later and [is] said to have come from the old Oregon City Courthouse. Very few of these fences have survived due to scrap drives during World Wars I & II." - The History & Development of Portland's Irvington Neighborhood, by Roy E. Roos.

Colonial revival homes have a centered, accentuated entrance, symmetrically balanced windows, pillars on the porch or flanking the front entrance and sometimes – as in this example – continuous dormers.

Look for this McCulloch Construction property (1729 NE Siskiyou Street) to be unveiled in 2011 after some carefully considered remodeling. Call 503-709-2249 for available tour dates.
